International School Held the “Yummy Zongzi and Sweet Friendship” Culture Experience Activities for Overseas Students

While packing Zongzi, Anlin, an overseas student from Bahamas said, “the Chinese culture is really broad and profound: the green leaves, white rice, red beans and oily cured meat look nice and taste yummy!”

On June 16, as the Dragon Boat Festival was approaching, International School organized the “Yummy Zongzi and Sweet Friendship” Culture experience activities for overseas students which include making Zongzi, visiting Tianbao dragon kiln and Yaoli ancient town, sampling Chinese gourmet and experiencing Chinese traditional culture.

At the site, glutinous rice, candied jujubes, red beans, green beans, cured meat and grains lined up. In order to help international students master Zongzi making skills as soon as possible, teachers of the International School and residents of Liuxi village became instructors.

"First roll the leaves, then fold them from one side to the other. Then you can fill them with glutinous rice. It must be tied up in the end." Looking at the instructor's demonstration, the students tried several times and finally made it. It was the first time for most of them to make Zongzi, so they felt really excited and novel. With the help of instructors, students learn to roll leaves, wrap glutinous rice, fill with preserved meat, wrap leaves, tie ropes, and water them

Professionally ...... Their earnest was frequently praised by the local residents of Liuxi village.

“The Zongzi making process is so funny and the taste of Zongzi is so sweet and special. The Chinese food culture is wonderful!” Nastasia, a doctoral candidate from Russia said.

"In fact, overseas Chinese attach great importance to traditional Chinese festivals. Every year, we prepare Zongzi by ourselves during the Dragon Boat Festival, and our elders also tell us the origin of this festival, so that we can have a better understanding of our ancestors (country of origin).Malaysian (Chinese descendants) international student Wu Zhenxi said.

The overseas students praised the making process of Zongzi novel, the taste unique. They said that they love Chinese traditional culture very much, especially the distinctive Chinese food. When they came back to their hometown, they would tell their friends and relatives about Chinese traditional culture and food culture in detail.

Then, the group visited Tianbao dragon kiln, Yaoli ancient town. Through watching local residents sewing sachets, making colorful ropes, preparing for dragon boat race and other activities, the overseas students further understood the traditional Chinese festivals and experienced the implications of the traditional Chinese festivals. In the course of the activities, the students took pictures and shared with their relatives the traditional Chinese festival.
