On September 19, Professor Lyu Pinchang, Acting President of JCU and Chair of the International Ceramic Education Alliance (ICEA), led a delegation to visit the private art gallery of Pierre Huber in Lisbon, Portugal. Huber, Honorary Professor at JCU, founder of the Art Basel Young Artists Program, and an internationally renowned contemporary art collector, engaged with the delegation in in-depth discussions about supporting emerging Chinese ceramic artists, promoting China’s leading ceramic artists and works on the global stage, and fostering international cultural and artistic exchanges. The meeting resulted in several mutual agreements.

During the talks, Professor Lyu introduced JCU’s history, specialized disciplines, and achievements in international collaboration. “As a leading institution for ceramic art education in China and worldwide, JCU is dedicated to cultivating globally minded artistic talent,” he noted. “We hope to leverage Mr. Huber’s influence in the global art world to create a platform where outstanding Chinese ceramic artists can showcase their talent and connect with the world, thereby amplifying the reach of Chinese ceramic culture.”

Mr. Huber expressed strong agreement, highlighting his deep admiration for Chinese ceramic art. He described being named an Honorary Professor at JCU as one of the greatest honors of his life and pledged his support for the university’s internationalization efforts. “My passion for Chinese ceramic art runs deep,” Huber shared. “It embodies not only a rich historical and cultural heritage but also unparalleled craftsmanship. In today’s globalized world, introducing this unique artistic charm to a broader audience is meaningful.”

During their discussions, JCU and Huber reached a preliminary agreement on a framework for collaborative projects. They plan to co-host a Sino-European Ceramic Art Exhibition in 2025, which will be showcased at JCU Museum and leading European art institutions and galleries. The collaboration will include initiatives such as joint Sino-European ceramic art camps for young artists, a residency program for European artists at JCU, and efforts to globally promote Chinese ceramic art and cultural exchange. Additionally, the two parties explored supporting the construction of the JCU Museum and utilizing modern technology and new media to enhance the visibility of contemporary Chinese ceramic art.

Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation to infuse new vitality into ceramics, an ancient art form, within the context of mutual learning between East and West.

Following the meeting, Huber invited Professor Lyu and his delegation to view his private collection, which features works by prominent Chinese contemporary artists such as Fang Lijun, Liu Jianhua, Mao Yan, and Zhan Wang. These timeless pieces not only reflect Huber’s passion for Chinese culture but also added a symbolic layer to the meeting.

This visit represents a significant step in JCU’s internationalization strategy and its efforts to expand global partnerships. Moving forward, JCU will collaborate with more friends from abroad like Mr. Huber to advance Chinese ceramic art on the world stage and foster greater understanding and respect among different civilizations.

Amid deepening globalization, cultural and artistic exchanges, particularly in ceramics, have become a vital bridge connecting people worldwide. Leveraging signature platforms such as the International Ceramic Art Biennale, Tang Ying Ceramic Workshop, and JCU Residency, JCU is committed to building a globally influential and sustainable platform for ceramic cultural exchange. The university wishes to share the story of China through “china”, enhancing the global appeal of Chinese ceramics as a national treasure.

During the visit, Professor Lyu presented Mr. Huber with two editions of the Jingdezhen International Ceramic Art Biennale collection and a personal art album.

The meeting was also attended by Wang Zhiwei, Deputy Director of the CPC Committee (President’s Office), and Li Chao, Associate Dean of the International School.
