Recently, Associate Professor Li Chao, Deputy Dean of the International School at Jingdezhen Ceramic University, published a featured article titled“Journey of Ceramics – 2023 Jingdezhen International Ceramic Art Biennale”in the internationally renowned journalCeramics Art & Perception. Co-authored with Sergio Soave, Professor at The Ohio State University, and Moyra Elliot, Chair of the Fellicher Challenge (New Zealand), the article systematically presents the curatorial vision of the Biennale’s series:“The Spirit of Ceramics– The Journey of Ceramics – The Future of Ceramics.”




Through in-depth analysis of over 30 award-winning works, the article highlights the evolving landscape of Chinese ceramic art, emphasizing the coexistence of tradition and modernity as well as the dialogue between national identity and global discourse.
At a time when cultural confidence is recognized as a cornerstone of national development, Jingdezhen Ceramic University remains academically driven and historically grounded, actively taking up the responsibility of promoting China’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage. Since its launch in 2021, the Jingdezhen International Ceramic Art Biennale (CJICB), co-organized by JCU and the Jingdezhen Municipal Government, has become a significant platform for the international dissemination of Chinese ceramic culture. It has emerged as a new focal point in the global ceramics community, drawing widespread attention from artists and scholars alike.
Li Chao has long been engaged in international exchange and research in ceramic culture and art. His recent scholarly work has focused on advancing the internationalization of contemporary Chinese ceramic art and education. He has published a series of biennale-focused articles in prestigious ceramics journals such asCeramics Art & Perception(Australia),Ceramics Now(USA),Inforceramica(Spain), andChinese Ceramic Artists(China). In particular, his contributions toInforceramicaexplore how the Biennale integrates the cultural DNA of the millennium-old porcelain capital with contemporary artistic currents—offering a distinct “China solution” to global ceramic art.
These academic achievements have once again demonstrated China’s creativity and leadership in the field of ceramics and have significantly enhanced the international influence of the CJICB.
